Book Review: April 2025
Finally got back to fiction / novels. It was much needed and I loved it! Sending more recs por favor! What books did you love this month
“Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt
5 stars
I got this book as a gift while visiting family in Savannah and it helped me to get a feel for the city. I love a book that's about a place as much as the humans in space. The characters were crisp and sharp and I loved the interconnected stories. Some of the scenes were funny and others were intense. The rich details kept the story moving along at a good pace. Apparently it's a movie, but you know I'll take the book over a screen any day! Still, I might watch it ;)
"The Collective Regrets of Clover" by Mikki Brammer
5 stars
Having just completed a Death Doula training, I was so curious to read this book (which was recommended by someone in the class.) It's heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. The main character Clover is real, quirky and messy (aren't we all?) It's a story about love, death and becoming a new person in the face of loss. The quote that really hit me was, "the secret to a beautiful death is to live a beautiful life. Putting your heart out there. Letting it get broken. Taking chances. Making mistakes." The time, energy and attention that goes into death work is fascinating to me (yup, I'm Scoripio rising) Because we're not here to get it "right", we're here to explore, and that means living our lives fully.
"The Memory Police" by Yoka Ogawa
3 stars
Yes, I'm trying to get back to fiction and I had high hopes for "the Memory Police" And yes, it's a dystopian novel, so I knew it was going to be weird. But maybe because we are living in a dystopian society in the US at the moment it was just too creepy. I felt like some parts didn't connect well and I didn't feel a strong pull with some of the characters. There were tender moments and a few suspenseful moments but not a lot of forward progress / a destination. And maybe that was the point.
