Nature is the OG sound healer
When I started my sound healing training in the Fall of 2023, I already felt deeply how sound impacted my health and wellness. It was part of what inspired me to do the training.
I knew what humans have felt in their bodies since the beginning of time: Nature is the OG sound healer.
As a sound healer, it might be taboo for me to say this, but you don’t actually need me (gasp!) If you want the benefits of sound healing, you don’t need any fancy instruments…you can just go outside (or stay inside with your kitty!)
Sound healing isn’t new. It’s been around as long as humans have been paying attention and listening to the world around them. Long before crystal bowls, Koshi chimes, or rain sticks we were regulating our nervous systems through natural frequencies. Even our feet on the ground is a connection to the natural world.
Sound is vibration. And your body? Mostly water, fascia, and nerve endings…aka an excellent receiver of vibration. When certain frequencies reach us, they don’t just get “heard” by the ears, they’re felt by the nervous system.
To give you some examples (with just a little bit of nerd facts), check out these healing frequencies found in nature:
🌊 Ocean & Flowing Water
40–60 Hz – Deep, grounding undertones (felt in the body)
80–120 Hz – Steady wave rhythm, calming and regulating
200–400 Hz – Gentle surf, streams, trickling water
🌬 Wind
100–300 Hz – Soft, grounding rustling
500–1,000 Hz – Air movement through leaves and branches
1,500–3,000 Hz – Whistling winds, higher movement
🐦 Birds & Insects
1,000–2,000 Hz – Songbirds, melodic calls
2,500–4,000 Hz – Chirps, communication sounds
5,000–8,000 Hz – Dawn chorus, insects, cicadas
🐱 Cat Purring
25–150 Hz – Often cited as a range associated with calming, healing, and tissue repair. Feeling stressed? Perhaps it’s time to get yourself a kitty!
From an evolutionary standpoint, nature sounds the signal of “no immediate threat” or “we’re good here”
Flowing water = resources nearby
Birds singing = predators likely not present
Gentle wind or rain = environmental consistency
Your nervous system relaxes in a way it was designed to…it co-regulates with nature.
I love offering sound baths using instruments and I also get so much from the sounds in nature. Both my sound baths and nature sounds invite you to relax and give you permission to rest. You don’t need to DO anything, simply be present for what is there. Notice your breathing patterns, emotions and feelings but do not attach meaning to them. Simply allow sound to move through you for a nourishing experience.
Try it for yourself. Notice how you feel:
Before → after a sound bath
Before → after hearing the ocean
Before → after hearing a siren go by your window
Nature and sound healing are here for you, because they are already a part of you. All you have to do is receive.
